Botanical Notes on Winter Flowers in Korea

Abstract
This investigation is to proposed to find winter flowers of seed plants from three localities, Kwangnung of central Korea, Mt. Keryong between central and south Korea, and the Island of Cheju province of the southern coast of Korea.
The author recognized there are many herbaceous plants and a few woody plants blooming in winter (January and February) while nonsingle flowers bloom in the Kwangnung, and the Mt. Keryong areas.
The winter flower plants are as follows: Poa annua Linn., Narcissus tazetta Linn. var. chinensis Roemer, Viola acuminata Lede., V. verecunda A. Gray, Stellaria media (Linn.) Cyrillus, Corydalis incisa (Thunb.) Pers., Capsella bursa¡©pastoris (Linn.) Medicus, Lepidium apetalum Willdenow, Brassica campestris Linn. ssp. napsus Hook fil. et Anders var. pekinensis Makino forma, B. campestris Linn. ssp. napsus Hook fil. et Anders var. nippo¡©oleifera Makino, Rosa sp., Chaenomeles trichogyna Nakai, Camellia japonica Linn. Daphne kiusiana Miq., Veronica persica Poir., Aster gomena (Kitam.) Honda, Calendula arvensis Linn., Callistephus chinensis Nees, Chrysanthemum lavandulaefolium Makino, Cirsium maakii Maxim. var. ussuriense(Regel) Kitamura, Senecio vulgaris Linn. and Solidago virgaurea Linn. var. asiatica Nakai.
The authors also found green herbaceous plants of about 80 species and not less than 60 species of evergreen broad leaf woody plants on the Island of Cheju province but about 25 species of green herbaceous plants in the Kwangnung area, and 35 species of winter green herbaceous plants in the Mt. Keryong area in Chungnamdo province. The bamboo and poncirus are growing on the hill¡©side of Mt. Keryong and the Island of Cheju province, but not in Kwangnung in central Korea.
These winter flowers, winter green herbaceous plants, and evergreen broad leaf woody plants are flourishing on the Island of Cheju province because there are mild and warm temperatures (average temperature of January and February:5 & 5 centigrade degrees) and proper precipitation (total amount of January and February: 114.1§® & 162.4§®). It seems that the winter flowers and winter green condition of seed plants in certain areas are affected by climatic weather, particularly the temperature in Korea.
